I can’t beleive how good this car looks. It’s ridiculous. Wipe your jaw off the floor, because I want you to meet my future daily driver,’Copperback’. Copperback is an extensively modified and worked ‘67 Ford Mustang, the product of well-known American modifiders ‘The Ring Brothers’.

The Copperback sold recently at a Barrett-Jackson Auction (think Shannons) for 159,000 Yankee bucks. Another product of these gifted brothers, ‘Reactor’, went for $253,000. If you followed SEMA, you may have known it. These guys show amazing diligence and workmanship to create such things of beauty.

Dazzling amounts of bespoke material is used throughout the cars. Copperback, for example the suspsenion, steering and brakes are all new, custom jobs. A 427 cubie, 560 HP Roush Racing engine is mated to a Tremec 5-speed tranny. Panels have been modified and fabricated all over the place, along with shaved doorhandles to accentuate the car’s beautiful lines.

One hundred and sixty grand? Bargain!

A little while ago I looked at the evolution of the hot hatch and where it started, namely the Mini Cooper S. What some credit as the first of this breed, the Cooper epitomised the small, lightweight ethos that makes hot hatches so special, and feel different from anything else.

The Cooper S template was destructively successful and popular, and has turned into a very collectible car in modern times.

As the 70’s took off, the ‘hot hatch’ gene pool began to grow. Cars like the iconic Volkswagen Golf began to gain a lot of popularity. ‘Sports’ options that previously only included cosmetic and aesthetic upgrades began to spread to the driveline and suspension in a bid to increase performance. Like the Cooper ‘S’ the Golf Gti also blazed a trail of sporty credibility and popularity.

Many carmakers, like Isuzu, Saab and Fiat began to develop and sell range-topping superminis with a definite lean towards performance. Weight was kept low, but performance and handling were upped to provide a much more entertaining drive.

Markets around the world loved the idea, and bought them in droves. Competition sprung up, and wars were waged across the brands. Such an environment was fantastic for buyers and enthusiasts, as carmakers were constantly vying for top spot in a more and more lucrative niche.

Let’s have a closer look at the Golf Gti Mk I, and what made it such a hit. The engine, a 1.6 litre dual-carb fed four-pot was sourced from Audi, and was linked to a snappy 5-speed transmission. Disk brakes, bigger wheels, a lower ride height sitting on stiffer springs all amounted to a lot of fun.

Fuelling was changed from carburettors to a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system and increased power to 110 bhp (82kW) from 100bhp (74kW). An additional 2hp and 13 lb/ft were gained from stroking the engine capacity out another 200 cc.

Hardly any additional weight was added compared to the base Golf. The spartan interior and humble wheelbase did not allow for any significant weight increases, and so the acceleration, handling, braking and durability all was for the better.

Volkswagen was not along, however. Ford’s successful Escort had RS1600 and RS2000 derivatives, that both had uprated supsension, power and braking capabilities. The RS1600 even had a strengthened shell that was more resistant to twisting under pressure. Go fast options of Escorts culmintaed in the giant-slaying Escort RS Cosworth, a four wheel drive monster with 167 kW and a massive whale-tail to boot.

I have been looking at the evolution of superminis, and to be honest I feel gibbed. In line with progress and general perception of things getting ‘better’, the everyman’s performance car has lost it’s mojo and swagger. They’re bigger, heavier, more complex and I think less appealing.

Let’s have a look right back at the start. Many credit the Volkswagen Golf GTi as the first to start the craze. Sure, it was the first to have that now fabled GTi badge, but there were some (very good) hot hatches before it that are very much worth mentioning.

Perhaps the best place to look for a good backgrounder is the iconic Mini, especially the Cooper ‘S’. Released first in 1959 by the British Motor Company (BMC), the first Mini Cooper was a collaboration between original designer Sir Alec Issigonis and friend John Cooper.

In it’s most exciting form, the Cooper S had a engine capacity of 1,275cc (up from 848), and was fed by twin SU carburettors. During the mid 60’s the Cooper ‘S’ tore many prominent international race events to shreds. Wins at the Monte Carlo Rally in ‘64, ‘65 and 67 (a 1, 2, 3 result in ‘66 was disqualified by a French judge) is just one example.

The car also got notable fame at the 1966 Gallaher 500 held at Mount Panorama, where nine (!) Morris Cooper S’ took the top places. Wins at races on weekends, especially the endurance races helped boost a car’s image through the roof. “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” didn’t just sound good, it was very apparent.

I have seen a Cooper S in action at a Historic Sports and Race Car Association (HSRCA) of NSW race meet at Oran Park and Eastern Creek. The only time the Mini Cooper was not breathing down the neck of 289 V8 Mustang (Similar to Geoghean’s) was down the longer straights, but the little Cooper made up for the loss quickly under brakes and with cornering speed.

What made the Cooper ‘S’ dominate so easily? It screams at you when you look at it; the size and weight of the car gave it huge physics advantages over anything else. The Cooper S did not weight over 700 kg; speaking volumes about the car’s characterstics and performance. For a quick comparo, the current Cooper S is 3,714 mm long, and 1,912 mm wide. The 1964 Austin Mini Cooper S, with the 1275 motor was only 3,054 mm long and 1,410 mm wide.

Although it is one of the lighter sportscars available today, the Cooper S still weighs around 1,100 Kilos. Where does all the extra weight go? softening creature comforts for weak, fragile drivers who should harden up?

I honestly beleive, as technology is stepping forward across all things mechanical, we should be able to keep weight down easier. A small, simple hatch that weighs around 800 kg would require only a tiny modern turbo’ed petrol motor to whisk it along. The whole mentality behind it though, seems to be lost.

We will just put in a bigger motor, which will need a bigger radiator and clutch, which will need a bigger housing, which will need a heavier gearbox, which will need strengthened/heavier diffs and axles. Oh, we better put bigger brakes on it as well. And while we’re at it, we can whack bigger wheels and tyres on it as well.

Are we just gettting bigger?

Is it too imaginative and selfish to imagine a car built to a weight, using lightweight components like exotic metal compounds and small, punchy and exciting motors? Is it still feasible?

Stay tuned, because I will explore this later in the second installment. A Car magazine poll crowned the Lancia Delta Integrale the best hot hatch, followed closely by the Saab 99 Turbo.

What do you think? Leave a comment about what you think is the best hot hatch of all time, whether it is opinion or personal experience, it is all valued.

Some say Aston Martin is growing a little hot under the collar. As they wait for the hordes of buyers to stampede in and buy the One-77, suddenly the Gaydon boys feel like they’ve been rudely stood up. Well they have, i suppose. Stood up by that bitch the economy. Despite bucket-loads of Reventons, Veyrons and CCXRs flying their coop to cashed up car nuts only recently, Poor old Aston has seemed to have missed that elusive ’seven-figure supercar market’ boat.

Whilst I was setting up this blog, the bottom of my left foot became very itchy. I took little notice of it to begin with, dismissing it whilst I continued trailblazing my way through setting up a blog.

It didn’t go away so easy though, as i got closer to activating this site, the itching intensified. Now slightly bemused by this, i though i should try and knock a blog out over it; you know, test the web 2.0 waters a bit. Now it’s spreading, pushing up past my foot and to my ankle; no amount of scratching can slake this primeval need to itch.

Thinking about it, maybe it is important, symbolic. However annoying it may be as I am trying to type, I now think of what mum used to says. “It’s the traveller within” she used to say, “the traveller within” that is sending a message to you – go out, get amongst it!

My mind begins to form some link between this new itch and this new blog. Maybe it’s connected, somehow.

—-

This blog is going to act like some kind of diary for my mental ramblings. Usually centred around cars, this seems to be the perfect tool for dissasembling and analysing my thoughts. If it is destined to fall on deaf ears, so be it. Constantly plagued by thoughts about cars, this will hopefully be some form of remedy, as so i can get to sleep at a more reasonable hour. Once again, fingers crossed. The itch has stopped.
