Gran Turismo 5 looms closer – Yamauchi promises the world

Under development for five years now, Polyphony Digital, the team behind legendary gaming icon Gran Turismo have been brewing the fifth installment for an unusually long time. Australians are unforunately still without a confirmed date for the long-awaited title.

Here is something I love about this game. Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo’s spiritual and intellectual owner and creator, got inspiration for the direction of the coming titles whilst participating in an endurance race at Germany’s Nürburgring.

Yamauchi was hugely unexperienced compared to the rest of the field, and cited Gran Turismo for the much-needed track knowledge of such a complex track. I cannot wait for some Forza fan to try and give me grief for having to wait so long; Rome wasn’t built in a day, and Gran Turismo is going to be a damned good game. Here is a quote from the man himself (god bless him).

“I wanted to confirm just how effective the experience in the virtual world is, by competing in a race on the Nurburgring. And that includes not just the driving aspects, but on a wider range of things including the building of the car, communication, and much more. And of course, this will all be fed back into future renditions of Gran Turismo. ”

Driving a not-far-from-stock Lexus IS-F, Yamauchi won his class, posting the best time in his team of 10.09 around the fabled ‘Ring.
