Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG – Gullwing is back, and due for Frankfurt

History has shown that a company attempting to reignite the flame of an old, successful model is a very risky move, especially when it is one of the most revered cult cars of all time. It may pay off and become incredibly successful (Think Mini, Monaro and Mustang). Or, it could be a joke that just so happens to have wheels and an engine (PT Cruiser, New Beetle.. must I continue?)

The original 300SL Gullwing is a truly beautiful and marvelous car. Introduced in 1954, it set the standard for Mercedes’ future design and reputation. Well known for it’s ultra-cool Gullwing doors, the 300SL also debuted the first petroleum direct fuel injection straight into the cylinders; improving performance and efficiency greatly.

During it’s heyday, the 300SL was the fastest production car available, topping out at 260 km/h. This was mostly thanks to the innovative fuel injection, along with a fantastic drag coefficient. The new, spiritual descendant has mighty big boots to fill.

First look proves that this new creation is a very, very good looking car. The Gullwing doors reach right from the bottom sill to the roof, creating very cool proportions. The nose is deliciously long, and follows an elegantly curved shoulderline right through to the cute little rump. The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is, in my books, gorgeous. The new SLS AMG isn’t far behind.

The original Gullwing was no slouch showpony, and neither will the SLS AMG. A 420 kW, 6.2 litre V8 will provide ample twist to the rear wheels only, especially considering the featherweight chassis. The 0-100 km/h dash will take 3.6 seconds, with the aid of launch control. Revving out at 6,800 rpm, the donk also has 650 Nm on tap from 4,750 rpm. Yeeha.
