Cool fluro – 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Hot on the heels of the new 911 Turbo, Porsche have released what is self-described as “the most sporting 911 yet”; the lairy 911 GT3 RS. In a world of SUV, 4wd and family wagon Porsches, this homogolation model is  a stark reminder of what those geniuses from Stuttgart can really do.

The GT3 RS follows a strict diet and loses some serious weight; the stripped out interior is the most obvious. But, there are more weight saving features that meet the eye. A lithium-ion battery option for example, can releive 10 kilograms from the GT3 RS.

Wider track for the front and rear has been acheived by widening the wheel arches, and a “purpose-built” PASM suspension system has been utilised to create what is perhaps the most hardcore drive-home-after-a-day-at-the-track machine available.

Dynamic engine mounts (wow!) are also used; allowing the car to effectively change the stiffness and tension between engine and chassis during driving. The mounts tighten up to increase stiffness and agility when you’re going hard, but can also loosen to give a more supple ride when you pop down to grab a loaf of bread.

Porsche also boast that although they have sapped an extra 11kW out of an-already ridiculously powerful 3.8 litre boxer-6, the car is still suitable for more ‘typical’ driving.

Don’t be fooled though, track performance has been lifted significantly for this model. Gear ratios have been shortened quite a bit compared to the normal GT3, giving a much higher potential top-speed down your local track’s main-straight.

The RS’ main purpose is for homogolating the hugely popular 100% track cars; it’s the real deal. We can expect more details of the GT3 RS to emerge during the Frankfurt Motor Show, so stay tuned.
