The introduction of the 320d not long ago has proved to be the tip of a diesel iceberg for BMW Australia, as they continue to announce many new oil-burning models with the ‘Efficient Dynamics’ tag.
The latest is the smaller-end-of-the-scale 118d, Mother Nature’s bestest Bavarian friend. Emitting only 119g/km and 4.5 l/100km (combined), chances are it will be a lot of commuters’ best friend as well. Economy in the 118d is slightly better than the 120d, of course at the expense of a little performance.
Another recently launched diesel kraut is the 730d, a mechanical marvel of power, luxury and economy. Pushing out 180 kw and an impressive 540Nm, the luxo-barge will sweep occupants away in 7.2 seconds, and coincedentally BMW have claimed it will only use 7.2 l/100km to do it.
Another very desirable diesel BMW is the 330d. Some motoring journalists have ranked it higher than the M3, mostly because of a smooth and strong power delivery coming from the huge amounts of torque. A fantastic driving machine that will still return a claimed combined figure of 6.8 L/100km.
All ‘Efficient Dynamics’ diesel burners carry a swag of fuel saving features: complete drivetrains and aerodynamic characteristics and tuned for optimum efficiency. Lightweight materials like aluminium are used liberally in the engine bay and chassis, and magnesium is used in the engine crankcase.
Such figures of combined performance, luxury and economy for yourself and the enviroment will place the BMW choice of diesel cars very well in the upcoming years. Will the trail that BMW is blazing pay dividends? Or will electric and hybrid technology steal the Bavarian thunder?
