As the name suggests, the i20 will slip in just below the perception-changing and successful i30 hatch. Director of sales for Hyundai Australia, Kevin McCann says the i20 will be aimed directly at the high-mass market leaders of the small hatchback section.
“We have said before that we see it as head to head with the volume end of the segment — that being the leading Japanese models- and that continues to be the strategy. The Getz will remain a fixture at the price-leader end of the market.”
So, look out Toyota Yaris, Mazda2 and Honda Jazz, this little Korean underdog is going to come out swinging. The unabashed European styling will be once again mixed with plenty of options and an attractive pricetag; just on a smaller scale.
Engine options are yet to be announced, but European models pack a choice of 1.2 (58kw), 1.4 (75kw), and 1.6 (94kw) litre 4-pots. The common-rail diesel available in the Northern Hemisphere will probably not be available in Australia.
